Spiritual Discovery: A Method for Group Discernment

Are you part of a community experiencing a growing interest in spiritual decision making?
Are you in a group engaged in tasks calling for a spiritual dimension? This workshop introduces a method for spiritual discernment that can be used by a wide variety of groups. The method can also be used for group spiritual direction and peer group supervision.
Based on a Prayer Model designed by Jane Vennard, the presenters’ Spiritual Discovery Method draws on both the spirit and the intellect while also encouraging significant growth and change in the communities and individuals touched by such groups.

Presenters Catherine Tran and Sandy Boyd are the authors of a just-published book on the topic of today’s workshop. They are seasoned spiritual directors and have served a number of congregations for over twenty years. Their extensive experience in leading spiritual discernment groups has led to the writing of their new book. You are invited to check the book’s website ( and attend the book’s formal launch following the workshop.

Catherine received her Master of Divinity in 1994 and MA in Theology in 1995. In 1998, she earned a Certificate in Spiritual Direction from Shalem Institute. Catherine is co-pastor at Grace Church in Buena Vista, CO. She is an accomplished pianist, and enjoys gardening, sewing, furniture finishing, baking, providing hospitality, and making a comfortable home in the mountains west of Denver. She met her husband in high school and they have been married since 1979. They have two children.

Sandy grew up in Iowa and lived in many places before settling in Colorado 25 years ago. Her varied occupations have ranged from professional librarian to Episcopal Priest to seminary/university teacher. A recent project has been her work with Catherine training congregational groups in discerning ministries and it is out of that work that their book came into being. She is pleased to be able to offer their Method in the SDCO Workshop format.
