Moving Beyond Story: Margaret Arms, Ph.D.

Thursday, August 22nd, 4–6:15 p.m. (networking, fellowship, and refreshments, 3:30–4 p.m.) Cost: $15 to $35, as you are able)

Topic

Many of us believe that we are what we do, where we come from, what has happened to us, and what religious tradition or political party we belong to, etc.  We think our identity rests there rather than understand that all these aspects of our lives are the contexts, the containers, the homes in which we live and grow; but, they are not who we are.  Contemporary writers on the spiritual journey from Cynthia Bourgeault to Richard Rohr all write about the need to divest ourselves of our false, egoic selves and claim the true self, which is where we dwell with God.

There is a “we” who does and experiences all these things, which is our identity. It is that “we” with whom God connects; yet, we attach ourselves to our story instead.

This workshop is designed to help spiritual directors learn how to encourage their directees to recognize that they are more than their stories, and to begin the journey toward grounding theiridentity in who they are as the Beloved of the Divine. Participants will learn what the role of story in the spiritual journey is, and what it is not. Workshop members will explore blocks to the journey to self, and tools to begin the process. Included in the workshop is ample time for questions, interactions, small group exercises.
